Using Art Activities to Promote Self-Esteem among Teenagers in the Ban Viengping Children's Home
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of art activities on the self-esteem levels of teenagers residing at the Ban Viengping Children's Home. The assessment was conducted before participation, immediately upon completion, and after a 3-month art activity, which also included an evaluation of satisfaction with the art program. Materials and methods: The quasi-experimental study was assessed in a sample group of teenagers who participated in art activities three times: before, after, and a follow-up of three months. The sample group consisted of 12 teenagers in the Ban Viangping Children's Home, aged 15 years and over, participating in art activities once per week for 2 hours per time, total of 8 times. The study's instruments include a self-esteem questionnaire, satisfaction with art activities questionnaire and opinions regarding the art activities. Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, repeated measures ANOVA, and content analysis were all included in the statistics. Results: The study found that after participating in the art activities, the average self-esteem score of the sample group was higher than before participating in the activity. Moreover, in the follow-up period, the average score was significantly higher than before participating in the activity. The average satisfaction score was at the highest level of satisfaction. Furthermore, content analysis revealed that members acknowledged that they were able to work in groups, express themselves through drawings, be confident in expressing their thoughts, and showcase their own work through an exhibition. Conclusion: Engaging in art activities can significantly boost self-esteem and generate high levels of satisfaction, as a result of the shared positive emotional reflections among teenagers in welfare institutions. This can serve as a pathway to promote self-esteem effectively.
