This study investigated the influence of TikTok-assisted learning on the English-speaking proficiency of Thai learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and analyzed their learning experiences within a technology-enhanced context. A mixed-methods design was utilized, integrating a one-group pretest-posttest framework with interviews. Fourteen first-year students enrolled in a Business English program at Roi Et Rajabhat University took part in the study. The quantitative instruments comprised speaking performance evaluations conducted prior to and following a six-week instructional intervention. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews aimed at exploring learners' impressions of speaking exercises assisted by TikTok. Quantitative data were examined via descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-tests, and Cohen’s d effect size analysis, while qualitative data were assessed by content analysis.
The findings demonstrated a statistically significant enhancement in learners' speaking performance following engagement in TikTok-based activities. The post-test scores were much superior to the pre-test scores with statistically significant at .05 level (t = 8.306, p < .001), exhibiting a substantial effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.22). Enhancements were noted in various aspects of speaking, including pronunciation, fluency, grammatical precision, content structure, and communicative confidence. The qualitative findings showed that learners perceived TikTok as an engaging and supportive medium that encouraged repeated practice and self-reflection. Learners also reported feeling less anxious and more confident when they could rehearse and record their performances privately.
