Learning outcomes serve as a key indicator for evaluating the effectiveness of blended learning. This study aimed to assess the gap between current learning outcomes and expected objectives among undergraduate students majoring in Early Childhood Education at private universities in Nanning, Guangxi. A questionnaire was employed to evaluate learning needs across three dimensions: professional knowledge, professional competencies, and professional philosophy and ethics. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and the Modified Priority Needs Index (PNI Modified). The findings indicated that while students held very high expectations for blended learning (M = 4.26), their perceived current level was significantly lower (M = 3.21), revealing a substantial gap. The most critical gaps, reflected by the highest PNI values, were identified in “integrating community and local educational resources” and “critical thinking and innovative problem-solving.” These competencies are essential for addressing authentic and complex childcare scenarios. Their deficiency not only constrains students’ immediate competence but may also hinder their long-term professional development. Consequently, this study establishes a priority sequence for improvement, providing empirical evidence and strategic direction for developing a targeted blended learning enhancement model for early childhood education programmes.
