The Relationship between Thesis and Independent Study Challenges and Expectations of Study Completion among Graduate Students at Mahasarakham Business School, Mahasarakham University

This study aimed to: 1) examine the relationship between problems encountered in thesis and independent study preparation and graduate students’ expectations of completing their studies at the Mahasarakham Business School, Mahasarakham University; and 2) analyze the factors influencing these expectations. The sample consisted of 103 graduate students. Data were collected using both closed-ended and open-ended questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis.
The results revealed that problems related to thesis and independent study preparation were significantly correlated with students’ expectations of completing their studies (r = 0.306, p < .05).
The regression model was statistically significant (F = 5.149, p < .05) and explained 9.3% of the variance
(R² = 0.093). Knowledge and understanding of thesis preparation, as well as the quality of academic supervision, had a significant positive influence on students’ expectations (β = 0.214, p < .05). In contrast, enrollment in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program had a significant negative effect
(β = −0.194, p < .05). The findings suggest that research knowledge, supervisory support systems, and program characteristics are key factors influencing students’ confidence in completing their studies. Therefore, the faculty should strengthen advisory systems to better support students in conducting research effectively and achieving their academic goals.
