Listening to Voices from Elderly : Fighting and Social Space Construction

Abstract

This paper showed the elderly holistic negotiated concepts including marginality, role, identity
and social space to analyze lived experiences of elderly. Conclusion are drawn from qualitative data
collected by using the guideline of observe and interview forms. This research divided two key
informants; 4 government officials, 15 elderly and a review of related documents and literature.
Marginalization of elderly was revealed through this research as part of social construction processes that
result in health issues, poverty, public policy, and the welfareoftheelderlynotthoroughlyand unfair. This
reflects of elderlyhave been arrested, placed in positionon marginality andfacedwiththe problem
ofthedefinitionand creation ofdiscourse. However, elderlyalsotryingtofightin the dimensions
ofidentitystruggle in dailylifeandconstructsocialspaceforthemselvesover time.
