A Self-Directed Learning Model in Using English for Tourism in Ban Tha Muang Community Selaphum District, Roi Et Province

Abstract

This research aimed to develop English language skills within the Tham Wong community. The objectives were to (1) investigate problems related to using English for tourism in the community, (2) create a self-learning model for using English for tourism in the community, and (3) compare satisfaction levels with the self-learning model for using English for tourism. The study employed a mixed-methods research design, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data from community members directly involved in community-based tourism through a purposive sampling of 30 individuals. Data collection methods included questionnaires on English language development needs for tourism, pre- and post-tests, and an evaluation form for feedback. Statistical analysis involved percentages, means, standard deviations, and a t-test for comparing means between two sample groups. Qualitative data were collected through interviews, in-depth interviews, observations, and content analysis.

            The findings revealed that (1) the main problems were primarily associated with the elderly population, difficulties in memorizing vocabulary, limited English language basics, scarce opportunities for practice, and a lack of confidence; (2) the self-learning model should be in the form of a portable handbook with images, English words accompanied by large-font lettering, categorized according to community needs, and with blank pages for recording new vocabulary. The model should be introduced through training sessions before use; (3) satisfaction levels with the self-learning model were highest among females. The learning materials aligned with the community context and needs.
