The Study of Poverty and Factor Affecting Poverty in Thailand

Abstract

          The purposes of this research were to study 1) the situation of poverty in THAILAND, and 2) the factors affecting poverty in THAILAND. The methodology focused on quantitative research. The study sample was secondary data from THAILAND household socio-economic survey (SES) 2006-2019 in the National Statistical Office and Office of The National Economic and Social Development Council. This research applied the linear regression model to analyze data.

          The findings showed that the number of poor and the proportion of poor people in THAILAND tends to decrease. However, there were still some people with chronic poverty, especially the poor who lived in Mae Hong Son, Pattani, Narathiwat, Kalasin, and Tak provinces with the highest proportion of poor people for many consecutive years and there is a serious problem of poverty. In addition, factors affecting poverty in THAILAND depend on the increasing per capita income and education with statistical significance at the 0.10 level. Therefore, the government should encourage people to access quality education and promote employment for the poor to have sufficient income and escape poverty.
