Abstract

This article is a document research, analyzing relevant academic documents to examine what are the new values in the 21st century digital journalism, whether they are different from the past. The research objectives are; 1) to study the new values in the 21st century digital journalism, and 2) to gain updated knowledge contribution toward digital journalism.

The study found that 1) the news evaluation in digital journalism todays considerably overlaps with the news elements identified previously by former scholars. The main debates and academic discussions recently emphasized on digital-user influences and the transformative characteristics of digital media. Digital journalism scholars give additional arguments that to define news values in digital age, one should also consider ‘procedures of news gathering’, and news quality both contents and photos, as well as the use of contemporary media platforms to add value for news story. 2) newsmen and organizations in their day-to-day works, usually consider news values in cooperate with “news productions’ technique”, in order to co-opt with news system and to further the relevant information which should be gathered and investigated. Hence, the news evaluation and news values are seen as a driven motivation in producing news nowadays, and influencing the process of news selection, and work production. However, the emerging digital contexts, especially User-generated content (UGC), participatory journalism, and social, political and cultural influences have played crucial roles in news media’s decision making in considering what’s news. The definition of news value thus can no longer be solid but dynamic. The decision can be made and remade upon news development in relating to the participation of the audience. News makers should take the most of this context to add news values to their stories, to expand audience reach and to improve their journalism skills in the processes.
