Abstract

The objectives of this research were to; 1) Studying the development of ordination in Theravada Buddhism. 2) Studying the pattern and ground of ordination for being Buddhist Heirdom in Theravada Buddhism.

Methodology was the qualitative Research, collected data by observation and implicated/non-implicated interviews.

          The research revealed that ordination of King Borommatrailokkanat as well as ordination of His sons and nephews brought recognition of Buddhism into the

Kingdom and, latterly, it has originated common practice of ordination among aristocrats, civil servants and locals. In the meantime, ordination has become opportunity for locals to get better chance in society, for instance, to get education and to avoid impressments into servant for nobility. Furthermore, Buddhists have the belief in merit and demerit and believe that ordination is the way to create merit and confute demerit. Those beliefs brought various forms of ordination, such as entering the priesthood for decedent, and entering the priesthood to fulfill one’s vow.
