Challenges of the Energy Business in the Era of Global Warming: Alternative Energy and Buddhist Social Responsibility

Abstract
In an era where global warming has become a worldwide crisis, the energy business faces critical environmental, economic, and social challenges. Concurrently, the demand for energy continues to rise steadily, while pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and utilize resources efficiently intensifies. The transition toward alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind, and bio-energy, therefore presents both opportunities and challenges that traditional coal-based energy businesses must confront simultaneously.
However, technological and policy developments alone are insufficient to address long-term sustainability. Energy businesses must integrate ethical concepts and Buddhist Social Responsibility into their corporate strategies by adopting the “Buddhist way,” which provides a conceptual framework and business solutions analyzed through the Four Noble Truths (Ariyasacca). This framework offers a structured approach to understanding the causes and solutions to global warming: Dukkha (Suffering), meaning the world is currently suffering from climate change; Samudaya (Origin), where the root causes are greed, delusion, and recklessness in resource consumption; Nirodha (Cessation), showing that the cessation of suffering is achievable by restructuring work processes to support efficient social and environmental management; and Magga (The Eightfold Path), the practical guidelines encompassing morality (Sīla), concentration (Samādhi), and wisdom (Paññā), aimed at balancing economic growth, mindful resource utilization, and respect for nature. These principles closely align with the global concept of sustainable development.
In practice, applying the Buddhist principles of morality, concentration, and wisdom can assist executives and personnel within an organization in making prudent decisions without being dominated by greed or short-term benefits. This heightened awareness leads to the development of energy innovations that not only generate profits but also carefully consider the impacts on the environment and local communities, emphasizing care for both internal and external dimensions of the organization. Consequently, operating an energy business in the era of global warming presents highly complex challenges. Overcoming these hurdles requires both a transition to alternative energy and a reinforcement of Buddhist Social Responsibility, utilizing the Buddhist way as a value framework that establishes equilibrium and guides the industry toward genuine sustainability.
