The Development of Creative Learning Resources to Enhance Mental and Intellectual Development Using Temples as a Base

Abstract

This research article aimed to examine the current challenges in knowledge management at Wat Suan Dok, a royal monastery in Chiang Mai, and to develop a creative learning platform designed to cultivate mental and intellectual growth through temple-based learning. The study further evaluated the effectiveness of this creative learning approach in enhancing cognitive and spiritual development. A mixed-methods design was employed, integrating documentary research, quantitative methods, and qualitative inquiry. The research site was Wat Suan Dok, Suthep Subdistrict, Muang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province. Key informants were divided into two groups: (1) primary informants—comprising 26 users and 7 experts or specialists, totaling 33 participants; and (2) an application trial group of 80 participants. Research instruments included semi-structured interviews, satisfaction assessment forms, and evaluation tools for mental and intellectual development. Data were analyzed using percentage and standard deviation.

The findings reveal three major insights: 1. Knowledge management at Wat Suan Dok remains unsystematic. Information is scattered, poorly categorized, and online content lacks historical depth. Important data, such as Buddhist-era dates, show inconsistencies and often lack reliable citations. Major obstacles include a shortage of specialists, limited funding, and insufficient technological infrastructure. These limitations hinder the presentation of compelling content and restrict public accessibility. 2. The development of a creative learning resource through the “Wat Suan Dok” mobile application represents a modern pedagogical innovation. The app integrates knowledge and engagement through game mechanics, narrative storytelling, and map-based technology. Its signature feature lies in revealing the philosophical and spiritual symbolism embedded in the temple’s architecture and artifacts. This design enables users to simultaneously explore the physical space and internalize key Buddhist teachings and reflective values. 3. Evaluation of creative learning for mental and intellectual development indicates highly positive user responses. The “Wat Suan Dok” application received the highest level of satisfaction across all dimensions—design, content, and usability—with mean scores ranging from 4.23 to 4.33. Users particularly emphasized its contribution to inner development, noting significant improvement in understanding Buddhist principles and temple history (intellectual development,  = 4.38), as well as enhanced calmness and inspiration (mental development,  = 4.30).
