Abstract

This study represents Phase 1 of a three-phase research project on the development of a self-directed learning program to enhance research skills in evidence-based medicine. The study aimed to examine the problems and needs in developing such a program. A descriptive research approach was employed, and data were collected using discussion point records in focus group sessions. The content validity of the discussion guide was verified using the item-objective congruence index. The sample consisted of seven purposively selected participants from the target population, including administrators of the Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital, medical training program directors, medical instructors, and resident physicians. Data were analyzed using content analysis.

The findings revealed the following: 1) A major problem in organizing training courses for physicians is limited time, which sometimes prevents them from attending courses of interest or completing the required learning hours; and 2) Physicians expressed a need for flexible, evidence-based medical research training programs that allow self-directed learning, supported by program organizers to help plan their study. Accordingly, the researcher proposed a blended learning program combining in-classroom training with online learning to accommodate these needs and enhance accessibility and flexibility for physician learners.
