Buddhist Communication Innovation of Somdet Phra Buddhaghosacariya (P.A. Payutto)

Abstract
The research on Buddhist Communication Innovation of Somdet Phra Buddhaghosacariya (P.A. Payutto) was to achieve the following research objectives: 1) to examine the doctrinal perspectives and praxis of Somdet Phra Buddhaghosacariya; 2) to analyze his methods of disseminating the Dhamma; and 3) to present his contributions as a form of Buddhist communication innovation. Employing a qualitative, document‐based approach, the research drew upon both primary sources including canonical texts and the subject’s published works and relevant secondary literature.
The research findings were as follows: 1) The concepts and practices of Somdet Phra Buddhaghosacariya (P.A. Payutto) focus on individual and societal development, emphasizing education and the cultivation of morality and ethics among children and youth. He also stresses discipline as a foundation for family well-being, which in turn supports peaceful and sustainable social development. His vision extends to promoting thoughtful use of natural resources and minimizing environmental pollution, thereby aligning with the broader goals of sustainable development; 2) The process of communicating Buddhist teachings employed by Somdet Phra Buddhaghosacariya emphasizes accurate and clear content based on the Pali Canon. He applies yonisomanasikāra (systematic critical reflection) as a method for processing and interpreting information. He carefully selects teaching methods, strategies, and skillful means (upāya) based on the audience’s characteristics, ensuring that the communication is appropriate and leads to a deeper understanding of the Dhamma; and 3) His innovations in Buddhist communication are innovative in their diverse forms of thought and methods of Buddhist communication, align with the global evolution of communication practices from the communication revolution to the era of artificial intelligence. He utilizes diverse communication formats to strengthen and sustain the propagation of Buddhism. Key characteristics include the accurate presentation of Buddhist teachings, contextualization of the Dhamma to suit contemporary society, integration of media and technology in dissemination efforts, development of global Buddhist networks, and cultivation of personnel and networks dedicated to the continuity of Buddhism.
