Abstract

The research article consisted of the following objectives: 1) to examine and analyze the meditation centers of Wat Ram Poeng and Wat Phra That Chom Kham; 2) to develop and link the network between these two meditation centers; and 3) to evaluate the potential of the network connecting Wat Ram Poeng and Wat Phra That Chom Kham. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating three research methodologies: documentary qualitative research, field-work qualitative research, and action quantitative research. Data were collected, organized, analyzed, and presented in a comprehensive manner to achieve the research objectives.

The study found that: 1) The network between Wat Ram Poeng (Tapotharam), Suthep Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Mai, Thailand, and Wat Phra That Chom Kham, Kengtung, Shan State, Myanmar, emerged through mutual relationships fostered by shared meditation practice, reciprocal visits, and continuous joint activities. Each temple also maintains its own internal and external networks, as reflected in recurring monthly meditation activities and collaborations with local organizations; 2) The development and linkage of the network between these two meditation centers were facilitated through existing joint activities, such as formal agreements or MOUs, training for meditation instructors, meditation retreats, reciprocal visits for learning exchange, and mutual support in various areas of need; and 3) The network’s potential is strong, as both temples engage in continuous collaboration in academic, meditation practice, social, and cultural domains. Each temple has distinct strengths: Wat Ram Poeng serves as a central center for Vipassanā meditation practice and a repository of the Tipiṭaka in Lanna Thailand, whereas Wat Phra That Chom Kham in Kengtung is historically, culturally, and religiously significant, acting as a community hub, spiritual center for local Buddhists, and an important attraction for visitors in the city.
