Problems and Guidelines of English Usage for Communication in Cultural Heritage Spots

Abstract
The objectives of this research were to investigate problems of English usage for communication in cultural heritage spots and to construct guidelines for the usage of English for communication in cultural heritage spots. This research was considered a survey research. The research was conducted in the area of Dhonburi District in Bangkok. The respondents in this research were thirty people who were responsible for supervising thirty cultural heritage spots. In this study, the two research instruments were employed for the collection of data and information; namely, 1) a questionnaire for investigating problems of English usage for communication in the cultural heritage spots and 2) an English Usage Evaluation Form for analyzing errors and mistakes of the English usage in terms of words choices, structures and expressions. The information and data collected were analyzed through the content analysis method and presented in terms of frequency count and percentage.
The results and findings indicated that: 1) The problems of the supervisors of thirty cultural tourist spots in Dhonburi district of Bangkok for using correct English in communicating with foreigners were found in the highest degree level. Moreover, the problems of the correct usage of all five English skills; namely, listening, speaking, writing, reading and translating. 2) The guidelines of English usage for communication in the cultural heritage spots were categorized into two sets; namely, 1) a set of words and expressions normally used in cultural heritage spots, and 2) a handbook of English for communication in the cultural heritage spots.
