Abstract

This research aimed at the following: 1) to study the cultural context of Chiang Mai's local architecture through the changing patterns of its use over time; and 2) to create contemporary art by synthesizing this knowledge into the creation of printmaking artworks in different formats. This study was a creative art research that investigated the history of Chiang Mai from the past to the present. Data were collected through documentary research, physical surveys, and structured interviews. The research area was Chiang Mai City District. The data was used to synthesize knowledge about the local architecture of Chiang Mai and create contemporary artworks based on the structure of the local architecture.

The findings were found as follows: 1) The changing context of the form and environment of Chiang Mai's local architecture includes the cultural changes in the city's way of life, which has gradually changed over time. This was done by examining the structures from the past to the present. The study found that learning and adapting to the present culture can be done with an understanding of the diverse cultural foundations of Chiang Mai. Learning about this history will help us understand the changing forms of society and culture in the present, which will have an impact on the future; and 2) The creation of contemporary artworks in "Time Series" involved studying the shapes of old architecture and selecting perspectives that met the requirements of the composition. This was done in order to reflect the concept through printmaking in a way that would evoke emotions. The prints were then recomposed in digital media and animation (media art), and other media such as street art and graffiti, all of which were used to interest the general public. This was done in order to convey the message of the work and to raise awareness of the value of local architecture, the changing context and understanding of the way of life over time.
