Palm-Leaf Manuscripts: The Strategy of Language Changes in Isaan Spirit-Retrieving Scripture
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study used the language change framework to investigate the strategy of language change in Isan spirit-retrieving scripture (Soo Kwan Chant) from palm-leaf manuscripts. The Isan spirit-retrieving scripture in 15 versions was selected by purposive sampling and analyzed descriptively.
The study discovered that Isan Dhamma letters featured in palm-leaf manuscripts on spirit-retrieving scripture that were transliterated into the contemporary Thai language had changed in alphabets, vowels, and tones. Alphabets changed in first consonants, consonant blends, and final consonants. 1. The 13 of first consonants were ข/Kh/, ค/Kh/, จ/C/, ช/Ch/, ส/S/, ถ/Th/, ท/Th/, พ/ph/, ภ/ph/, ผ/ph/, ย/y/, อย/?y/, ล/l/ The consonant blends were ร /r/ and ว /w/. Final alphabets changed in /k/, /t/, /p/, /n/. 2. Vowels changed in 10 of /a/, /i/, /i:/, /u/, /o/, /ɯː/, /ɛː/, /ua/, /ɔː/, and /ɤː/ 3. Tones in Isan Dhamma letters pronunciation depended on the word context.
