The Development of a Non-Formal-Education Activity Package to Strengthen Self-Esteem of the Homebody-Grouped Elderly

Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop a non-formal education activity package to enhance self-esteem among the home-bound elderly and to study the result of the package’s implementation. The study was conducted in two phases: 1) Phase 1 involved the development of the activity package, and 2) Phase 2 focused on analyzing the result of the package’s implementation. The study sample consisted of practitioners who worked with the home-bound elderly and the home-bound elderly aged 60-69 living in the Mueang district of Ubon Ratchathani Province. Research tools included interviews, self-esteem assessment questionnaires for the home-bound elderly, self-reflection questionnaires, emotion reflection questionnaires, and skill assessment questionnaires. Statistical analysis methods included percentages, means, and inferential analysis.
The results revealed that; 1. The development of a non-formal education activity package to enhance self-esteem among the home-bound elderly, which incorporates empowerment and andragogy theories, consists of four learning plans: (1) Understanding others and oneself, (2) Creating happiness options: making Thai loincloth garland fabric cotton, (3) Sharing and Boosting confidence; and (4) Opening one’s heart and reflecting on oneself. 2. The implementation result of a non-formal education activity package to enhance self-esteem among the home-bound elderly was found that before participating in the activity, the sample group had low self-esteem scores. The lowest score was in dimension 2, which related to achieving success leading to increased self-esteem. After participating, everyone's self-esteem levels improved significantly in all dimensions. The highest difference in average scores was found in dimension 2, which was the achievement of success that led to increased self-esteem, with a mean difference of 12.93. The sample group expressed that the completion of handcrafting boosted their confidence and their pride, and they also used these skills to help the elderly in their community.
