Abstract
A study entitled “Buddhist Methods for Promoting the Morality and Ethics of Professional Salesmen” is aimed at application in today’s society. Salesmen must be knowledgeable, intellectual, responsible towards their profession, honest and compassionate towards their customers. They must also refrain from babbling and being greedy, deceiving customers, or focusing just on profits. Exaggerating the facts is the same as fooling others with the purpose to deceive the listeners into believing without understanding and trusting the salesmen. This way, salesmen are seen to gain unethical profits or benefits, which contradict Buddhist precepts. This behavior violates sammājīva (right livelihood) and leads to the lack of prosperity in trade. Polite, honest, and pleasant words form the basis of a business career that must satisfy customers. Consequently, salesmen should utilize the Buddhist teachings and apply them properly without deceiving customers. This includes being honest and sincere to customers, selling things that are useful and appropriate, selling at the right time, making good friends, following moral principles, and developing their careers, in order to achieve prosperity and progress in the future.
