Abstract

This study was aimed to 1) investigate to what extent Pathumwan Institute of Technology students felt about democratic citizenship and 2) examine factors influencing their attitudes. The study involved 161 undergraduate students who enrolled in the semester 2/2020 and they were recruited through stratified sampling, according to the proportion of students of each faculty. The data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that 1) students’ overall attitudes towards democratic citizenship were relatively high (Mean= 4.30, S.D.= .55). When considering each aspect, students’ attitudes towards respect for the rights of others were at the highest level (Mean= 4.36, S.D.= .57) followed by their attitudes towards obeying rules and responsibilities to society (Mean= 4.30, S.D.= .63 and Mean = 4.24, S.D.= .63 respectively). In addition, 2) factors that could significantly affect students’ attitudes towards democratic citizenship at .05 included socialization through social media, democratic parenting, socialization through peer groups, and grade results. These four variables could predict students’ attitudes towards democratic citizenship, accounting for 61.6 percent (R2 = .616, F = 62.434, p-value < .05). Based on the findings, students’ attitudes on social responsibilities should be firstly developed. Moreover, students should be socialized correctly and appropriately by social media, family, peer groups, and educational institution.
