Dealing with the Covid-19 Situation Based on the Buddhist Way
Main Article Content
Abstract
This academic article deals with the application of Buddhist teaching as a practice guideline. The Buddhist teaching in which the author has applied as a tool in dealing with the Covid-19 situation is giving (dāna) and the practice of mindfulness (sati). The Covid-19 situation has changed the ways of people’s lives in the society, in which those who are unable to adapt themselves to the situation or did not have a life plan in advance will result in being stressed and unconfident in living their lives. The tool that the author has presented in dealing with the Covid-19 situation is: 1) Giving (dāna) by training oneself to sacrifice and be generous in helping others, and 2) The practice of mindfulness (sati) as a tool for self-care and a self-reminder not to be heedless. The practice of mindfulness also helps one to learn, understand, and accept what has happened by being mindful of the physical body and of what one thinks, says, and does. Mindfulness helps one learn to adapt with the on-going situation. It is a way to help society to have peace by starting within oneself. Having mindfulness helps one to have patience; therefore, when one has mindfulness, one has patience not to do what should not be done. Mindfulness together with sacrifice and sharing will let people in society be generous towards each other resulting in peace upon society.
