The Practical Form and Examination of Theravada Meditation in Thailand

Abstract
This article is a part of research entitled ‘Practical form and examination of Theravada meditation in Thailand’ aiming at analysis the practical form and examining of meditation in Thailand. The findings were that there are 5 main traditions of mediation in Thailand; 1) Yupnor-pongnor tradition of Phradhamdhiraiajmahamuni (Jodok Ñanasiddhi, Pali 9) is consistent with Tipitaka using 4 foundations of mindfulness by practicing up-down abdomen observing as the meditation’s objects, 2) Bud-Dho tradition of most Ven. Mun Bhuridatto uses body mindfulness with Bud-dho reciting as meditation’s object, 3) Samma-Arahang tradition of Phramongkoldhepmuni (Sod Candasāro) applies 4 foundations of mindfulness with Samma-Arahang reciting as objects of meditating, 4) Body-moving mindfulness school of Luang Poh Tian Cittasubho uses body contemplation by observing 5 manners of body moving as meditation’s object, 5) Anapanasati tradition of Bhuddhadasabhikkhu uses 4 foundations of mindfulness with breathing in-out as object of meditation. Practice and examination on meditation based on 4 foundations of mindfulness; body, feeling, mentality and mental objects are consistent with Tipitaka and beneficial for practitioners until the present.
