The Way of Promotion of the Peaceful Community According to Buddhist Peaceful Means: A Case Study of Doichang Coffee Farmers

Abstract
The objectives of this research are: 1) to study the context of the community of
Doi Chang coffee farmers, 2) to study the concept of enhancing of peaceful community
according to Buddhist peaceful means, and 3) to present the guidance of enhancing a
peaceful community of Doi Chang coffee farmers by Buddhist peaceful means. It is a
qualitative field research. The population and sample is the Doi Chang coffee farmers.
As the result, firstly, the community of Doi-chang coffee farmers has a long history
where traditions and ways of lives merge with nature. The majority of territory surrounds
with forest. Coffee farming is their occupation. In the past, the major occupation of this
community was opium-poppy farming. Later, the King Rama the 9th gave villagers coffee
seeds for growing instead of opium-poppy. Thus, coffee bean has become the main
product of Doi-chang community. Doi-chang villagers become the expert in growing good
quality of coffee bean. Secondly, the community has administration for economic selfdependency,
harmoniously unique with freedom, justice, self-dependency, and equality of
chance, including the welfare on the foundation of trust and helping one another. Finally,
Doi-chang community shares some aspects of Buddhist peaceful means: Giving by
gathering for making Doi Chang coffee good quality, sharing knowledge, giving chance, will
power, justice, equality, honesty, and performing truth. Doi-chang villagers conduct mutual
benefits of the brotherhood-uphill. Everyone is the owner by assisting and consulting to
one another. They have meetings to facilitate ones who need help. For example, they
have warm and impressive welcome to visitors. Therefore, the community of Doi Chang
coffee farmers becomes the well-known, strong and prosperous community up to the
present.
