Model of Media Literacy in News Presentation in the Convergence Era of the Receivers in Sai Mai District, Bangkok

Abstract

The research aimed to 1) study receivers’ media literacy in news presentations in the convergence era; 2) Compare media literacy in news presentation in the convergence era of the receivers in Sai Mai district based on demographic data; 3) study relationships between information exposure and media literacy in news presentation in the convergence era; 4) construct models of media literacy in news presentation in the convergence era of the receivers. Mixed method were applied in this research. The quantitative research included an investigation of population in Sai Mai district age 18 years and over. The qualitative research included in-depth interviews. The following results have been found: (1) Media literacy in news presentation in the convergence era should include skills and criteria in considering information and facts in the media. Media in the convergence era both facilitate and obstruct information reception and exposure. (2) Based on demographic data such as genders, ages, education, salary and type of communication devices, comparison of media literacy in news presentation in the convergence era of receivers in Sai Mai district revealed no difference. The receivers’ occupation and frequency of media exposure resulted to difference. (3) There were moderate relationships between information exposure and media literacy in news presentation in the convergence era. In terms of the ability to analyze media contents and the ability to assess media, there were low relationships between information exposure and media literacy in news presentation in the convergence. (4) The models of media literacy in news presentation in the convergence era of the receivers should include three skills: news literacy, media exposure and media literacy.
