Masculinities and Hegemonic Masculinity in Chai Phaet Sa Ya by V. Vinicchayakul

Abstract

Chai Phaet Sa Ya, a novel by V. Vinicchayakul, a Thai novelist, divides masculinities between scoundrels (chai phaet sa ya) and gentlemen. This article studied power relations between these masculinities through the concept of hegemonic masculinity. Results were that Chai Phaet Sa Ya the novel constructs gentlemen through hegemonic masculinity as possessing honesty, gentility, and economic capacity. By contrast, scoundrels are constructed as subordinated individuals who try to position themselves in relation to being that. These masculinities exercise power over women. In this way, Chai Phaet Sa Ya illustrates two dimensions of gender power relations: one within masculinities and another involving the imposition of masculinities on femininity.
