Structural Features of English Movie Titles in the Decade (2010-2019)

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate the structural features of English movie titles from 2010-2019 and to examine the importance of the features of the titles in different genres by using Functional-Typological Grammar framework to analyze data. The data were 300 English movie titles from 2010 - 2019. The statistic used to analyze the data was frequencies and percentages. The result of the study showed that the most used features for naming the movie titles were phrases, words and clauses, respectively. In addition, noun phrases and nouns were employed the most. In different genres of movies, the study revealed that all features were used for naming the titles. Indeed, words were mostly found in horror movie titles, phrases were mostly found in historical movie titles, and clauses were mostly found in drama and comedy movie titles. However, clauses were not found in any historical movies.
