The Tests of Bodhisattva as Councillors

Abstract
This article aims to study the tests that Bodhisattva encountered in the past-lives he was councillors to find out what kind of tests he confronted and how he handled those tests. The materials used were 23 Jataka stories from The 500 Buddha Past Lives (a complete version). The concept noted by Joseph Campbell in his Monomyth theory that every hero had to overcome various kinds of test to be a real hero was used to analyze the data. It was found that the 2 categories that was found the most number of times were 1) to solve problems and 2) to find answers. He had passed all the tests. He handled those tests with knowledge, wisdom and courage. In order to solve problems, he had chose tactics which were suitable with each context. He had appropriate qualification to be hero according to Campbell’s concept.
