Translation Strategies of Phrasal Verbs in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in the Thai Version by Ngarmpun Vejjajiva

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate translation strategies of phrasal verbs in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire written by J. K. Rowling and translated into Thai by Ngarmpun Vejjajiva, which includes 37 chapters. The six criteria used in analyzing the translation strategies were based on Baker (1992), Vinay and Darbelnet (1958) and Saibua (2007) including literal translation, communicative translation, translating by using equivalent idiom, translating by addition, translating by using slang, and omission. The results revealed that there were 442 English phrasal verbs used in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The translator employed 5 translation strategies to translate English phrasal verbs into Thai. The strategies included literal translation (66.97%), communicative translation (25.57%), translating by addition (6.33%), omission (0.68%), and translating by using equivalent idiom (0.45%), respectively. However, translating by using slang was not found. The most frequently used strategy to translate English phrasal verbs into Thai in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was literal translation (66.97%) and the least used strategy was translating by using equivalent idiom (0.45%).
