Problems on the Use of Chinese Endocentric Phrases Encountered by Chinese Major Students at Thaksin University

Abstract
This research article aimed at investigating problems on the use of endocentric phrases encountered by Chinese major students at Thaksin University. In this study, four tests were used to collect the data from 72 Chinese major students. Such data was analyzed by using a descriptive analysis. The results showed that the problems on the use of the endocentric phrases encountered by the students could be categorized into the following 4 aspects: the phrases modifying verbs (状+中), the phrases modifying nouns (定+中), indicators (的 and 地), and wrong word choice. The analysis of the data taken from the1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd tests revealed that the most common errors identified were on the use of the phrases modifying verbs (状+中), with 70.8%, 58.3%, and 79.1% in each test respectively. In the 4th test, the most common errors identified were on the use of the phrases modifying nouns (定+中) which was 93.1%. It was found that such problems were caused by 1) the participants’ mother-tongue interferences which influenced the Chinese endocentric phrases, 2) their lack of understanding on the use of the indicators (的 and 地), and their limited knowledge of Chinese vocabulary.
