The Co-operative Principle in Courting Situations of Courting Verses of Northeastern Thailand

Abstract
This study aims to examine the co-operative principle in courting situations of courting verses of Northeastern Thailand by analyzing 354 dialogues in courting situations of courting verses. The conversations in courting situations of courting verses are divided into 3 types including the courting verse when men are interested in women, the courting verse when women are interested in men, and the courting verse when women are not interested in men.
The study found that all dialogues in courting situations of courting verses of Northeastern Thailand both violate and follow the theory of Co-operative Principle by Herbert Paul Grice (1975, 1981). The study reveals that the maxim of quality is the most flouted maxim by 37.29 % of the verses which violate only one maxim, while the maxim of relation is flouted by 18.93 % and the maxim of manner is flouted by 11.58 %. The least flouted maxim is the maxim of quantity which is violated just 7.06 %. There are several verses that violate more than one maxim. The maxim of quality, the maxim of manner and the maxim of relation are mostly flouted by 4.80 %, whereas the verses violate the maxim of quantity, the maxim of manner and the maxim of relation are the minority as they are just 4.52 % of all courting verses. On the other hand, the maxim that is most included in courting verses is the maxim of quality, which are 6.50 % while the maxim of relation is followed by 4.80 % and the maxim of quantity is followed by 3.39 %. The maxim of manner is the maxim that is the least violated one by 1.13 %.
