Strategies to Avoid Plagiarism in Academic Writing: A Case Study of Master’s Students in Teaching English

Abstract
This study aimed to explore strategies to avoid plagiarism in English academic writing of five Thai master’s students in teaching English. A semi-structured interview and think-aloud protocols were employed to gather students’ writing strategies. The findings revealed that the most frequently used strategy is paraphrasing by the use of one’s own words and the use of others’ ideas with ethically appropriate citations. However, some students adopted an inappropriate strategy by copying some words without using quotation marks and without appropriate citations. This study suggests that teachers explicitly teach students how to employ correct citations and ethical ways of writing to avoid plagiarism in their academic papers.
