Ability and the Relationships between Grammar Ability, Reading and Writing Skills

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to investigate students’ English grammar ability and its relationship with reading and writing skills of Matthayomsuksa 3 students in the Secondary Educational Service Area Office 16 (SEA 16). The researcher employed the table for determining sample size proposed by Krejcie and Morgan (1970). The determined sample size was 370 students’ simple random sampling was then applied to obtain individual subjects. The instrument was an English test covering grammar, reading, and writing skills in which the test items were based on the Ministry of Education’s curriculum specification. The statistics used were mean ( ), standard deviation (S.D.), percentage, and Pearson’s correlation. The results of this study were as follows: 1) the levels of students’ English grammar ability, reading and writing skills were low. 2) There were positive relationships between English grammar ability and reading skills, and between English grammar ability and writing skills. The correlationwas significant at the 0.01 level.
