Lexical Creation in Tai Dialects in Language Contact Situations

Abstract
Lexical creation is one of linguistic changes found in language contact situations. New words (neologisms) are usually formed by members of the community with knowledge of another language using a word or parts of a word from that language to compose a new word in their mother tongue. Lexical creation is a phenomenon which is also found in Tai dialects, e.g. Lue, Khün, Phuan, Lao, etc. which are spoken in several areas of Thailand, especially in provinces in the nothern, the central, and the northeastern regions. The patterns or methods of lexical creation in Tai dialects are both similar and different. This academic article describes the patterns of lexical creation found in different Tai dialects in Thailand both from earlier literature as well as from the author’s research in five Tai dialects spoken in Nan province, i.e. Kam Mueang, Lue, Khün, Phuan, and Lao. The overall picture of patterns of lexical creation in Tai lan dialects spoken in language contact situations in Thailand will be presented.
