The Development of Myanmar Undergraduate Students’ Communicative Confidence in Listening and Speaking through Coaching Technique

The objectives of this research were 1. to investigate the effect of using a coaching technique on developing the English listening and speaking skills of Myanmar undergraduate students and 2. to examine their confidence in using English for communication in these skills. The sample population for this study consists of 20 Burmese undergraduate students studying in the Industrial Service and Tourism Management major, Faculty of Business Administration, at Northern College, Tak Province that enrolled in the first semester of the first academic year (2025). They were selected using purposive sampling, with the criterion that they were Myanmar students registered for the Listening and Speaking Skills course in the first semester of the 2025 academic year. The research was conducted using a quasi-experimental design. Data was collected using pre-tests and post-tests and success and confidence were assessed using a questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, and percentage) and the dependent t-test.
The research findings revealed that the post-test scores for English listening and speaking for communication were significantly higher than the pre-test scores, at a statistical significance level of 0.5. Furthermore, the evaluation of success and confidence indicated that the confidence level in English listening and speaking for communication was high. These results demonstrate that the coaching technique enhances students' confidence in English listening and speaking for communication.
