Buddhist Psychology Learning to Build Mental Immunity for Children and Youth
Keywords:

This academic article presents an integrative approach to Buddhist psychology in learning for strengthening mental resilience among Thai children and youth. The approach combines Buddhist teachings with contemporary psychological and neuroscientific knowledge in response to the growing mental health challenges faced by young people. According to the Department of Mental Health (2022), the prevalence of depression among Thai children and adolescents increased by more than 22 percent during the previous five years. The article proposes a conceptual framework consisting of three major components. First, it examines Buddhist psychological principles related to learning processes, including the Threefold Training (Sīla, Samādhi, and Paññā), the Four Noble Truths, the Four Brahmavihāras, and the Four Bases of Success (Iddhipāda). Second, it presents approaches to developing mental resilience through mindfulness, loving-kindness, and wisdom within educational settings. Third, it proposes practical activities and instructional models designed to strengthen psychological well-being among children and youth in the Thai educational system. A review of relevant literature indicates that the systematic integration of Buddhist psychology into educational practices contributes to the development of moral values, emotional regulation, and positive social behavior among students. The findings suggest that Buddhist psychology offers a promising and sustainable approach to fostering mental resilience among Thai youth and supporting their holistic development in the twenty-first century.
