From Aging to Elder Empowerment: Building a Valuable Life Through Buddhist Psychology

Thai society is rapidly transitioning toward an aged society, while many older adults experience mental health problems, including depression, suicidal ideation, and loneliness resulting from the loss of social roles and feelings of worthlessness. This article presents an application of Buddhist psychology to promote Phruetthaphalang (gerontological empowerment), which refers to the wisdom and inner strength accumulated through life experiences. The approach integrates Buddhist teachings from the Tripitaka, contemporary psychological concepts, and successful aging theory. The concept of Phruetthaphalang views old age as a period of harvesting life experiences, cultivating mature wisdom, and transmitting knowledge to younger generations. It comprises three dimensions: wisdom, psychological strength, and social participation. The developmental process includes three stages: 1) cultivating mindfulness and self-awareness through the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipaṭṭhāna), 2) practicing detachment based on the principles of non-self (Anattā) and the Three Characteristics (Tilakkhaṇa), and 3) developing loving-kindness through the Four Sublime States (Brahmavihāra) together with meaningful social participation. Previous studies suggest that mindfulness and meditation practices can reduce depressive symptoms, slow cognitive decline, and enhance psychological well-being among older adults. The expected outcomes include greater inner peace, deeper self-understanding, positive social relationships, and a stronger sense of meaning and happiness in life. Furthermore, older adults can become valuable sources of wisdom that contribute to strengthening Thai society in a sustainable manner.
