Buddhist Psychology: An Kāmarom of Sexual Desire for Spiritual Therapy

This academic article presents an analysis of Buddhist psychology concerning the contemplation of sensual desire as a means of spiritual healing. The study found that, from the perspective of Buddhist psychology, sensual desire refers to craving, attachment, and satisfaction derived from sensory experiences. Such desires arise from contact with sensory objects, including forms, sounds, odors, tastes, and tactile sensations, which can generate pleasure and sexual attraction. In comparison with Western psychological concepts, these experiences may be associated with affective responses, while in Buddhist psychology they are understood through the concept of vedanā (feeling), which encompasses pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral feelings. Pleasant feelings (sukha-vedanā) can give rise to taṇhā (craving), particularly sexual desire, which is regarded as one of the most influential forces shaping human behavior. According to Buddhist teachings, the appropriate way to manage sensual desire is through mindful awareness and contemplative reflection. The Buddha taught individuals to recognize the true nature of sensual desire and to contemplate its consequences with wisdom. Sexual misconduct is described as a grave unwholesome action, carrying consequences more harmful than physical dangers because of its profound moral and karmic implications. In Buddhist doctrine, serious violations of sexual morality may result not only in suffering in the present life but also in unfavorable rebirths, including states of deprivation (apāya-bhūmi, duggati, and vinipāta). In conclusion, Buddhist psychology emphasizes that the management of sexual desire requires awareness of one’s intentions and cravings, together with a comprehensive understanding of karmic consequences. Such awareness serves as a foundation for spiritual development and helps individuals avoid suffering in both the present life and future existences.
