Wisdom-Guided Faith: Case Study of Visakha Maha-Upasika in Sustaining Buddhism through the Principle of Samma-Sati

Abstract

This academic article aims to present the exemplary model of Visakha Mahaubasika in maintaining faith through wisdom when confronted with violations of the Dhamma-Vinaya by Buddhist monks. The study explores how the principle of Right Mindfulness (Samma-sati) can be applied to distinguish between individual behavioral misconduct and the institutional integrity of the Sangha and Buddhist teachings. Furthermore, it proposes practical applications of Visakha's lessons for preserving faith among Thai Buddhist practitioners in contemporary society.

Through literature review and analysis of Visakha's practices, this article presents her as an exemplary model of faith combined with wisdom (saddha-pannā). She demonstrated the ability to differentiate between the personal misconduct of individual monks and the fundamental principles of Buddhism. Her significant role in the development and refinement of monastic rules (Vinaya) showcases her constructive approach to addressing institutional challenges through the application of Right Mindfulness as a crucial tool for comprehensive consideration of information, avoiding hasty judgments, and distinguishing between facts and opinions.

This article presents four practical applications: 1) using Right Mindfulness in receiving and analyzing news, 2) choosing to support monks with proper conduct, 3) participating in the development and reform of Buddhism, and 4) making merit wisely. These approaches will help Buddhist practitioners maintain their faith steadfastly, remain unshaken by negative news trends, and participate constructively in developing Buddhism.
