Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the transportation cost structure and operational characteristics of oil palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB) transportation, compare transportation alternatives between outsourcing and self-owned truck investment, and evaluate the investment feasibility using Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), Return on Investment (ROI), and Payback Period analyses. The study employed a case study approach involving an oil palm plantation in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, operational observations, and transportation cost records from 2023 to 2025. The findings revealed that the major problem faced by the plantation was the inability to control transportation lead time due to reliance on outsourced transportation services. Historical data showed that transportation completion time ranged from 2 to 6 days, with an average of 4.11 days per harvesting cycle, which may adversely affect the quality of fresh fruit bunches after harvesting. Cost analysis indicated that the average annual transportation cost under the outsourcing model was 174,748 THB, whereas the self-owned truck alternative incurred an average annual cost of 109,375 THB. Consequently, the self-owned truck option could reduce transportation costs by 65,373 THB per year, representing a cost reduction of 37.41%. The investment analysis further revealed an ROI of 11.14% per year and a payback period of approximately 8.98 years. The results suggest that although investing in a self-owned truck requires a substantial initial investment, it can significantly reduce long-term transportation costs while improving operational control and transportation planning flexibility. Therefore, a self-owned transportation system may be a viable option for oil palm plantation operators seeking to enhance transportation efficiency and operational performance in the long term.
