Management of Irrigation Water for Farmers in the Central Region

Abstract

The objectives of this academic article are: (1) to study the irrigation water management practices of farmers in the central region of Thailand, and (2) to analyze the strategic plans of the Royal Irrigation Department, focusing on irrigation management and future directions. Data were collected from documents related to irrigation water management in agriculture. The findings reveal that irrigation management in the central region is a collaborative effort between government agencies and local farmers, aiming to maximize efficiency and ensure sustainability. The irrigation system, comprising canals, weirs, and water gates, has been continuously developed and maintained to ensure adequate water distribution to agricultural areas. Farmers play a crucial role in planning and controlling water use through community-level irrigation management committees, which allocate water according to suitability and priority, thereby reducing water shortages and conflicts among users. The promotion of water management technologies, such as drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and infrastructure improvements, has further enhanced water-use efficiency and strengthened resilience to climate change. Overall, irrigation management in the central region emphasizes multi-stakeholder participation, efficient utilization of water resources, and the creation of long-term agricultural sustainability.
