Abstract
Background and Objective: This study aimed to compare quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes who received insulin injections with those who received three oral hypoglycemic drugs and factors related to quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes, in Diabetes clinic, Police General Hospital
Design: Cross-sectional descriptive study
Materials and Methods: Data were collected at the Diabetes Clinic Police General Hospital, from September to December 2020, using questionnaire which included information on demographic data, diabetes status and Diabetes-39 questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, unpaired t-test and correlation analysis.
Results: The mean quality of life score for the insulin injected group was higher (more impact on quality of life) than the group received the three oral hypoglycemic drugs in both total scores and all dimensions (total quality of life score 31.31 ± 19.33 and 22.27 ± 13.71 respectively, p < 0.05). Factors associated with overall quality of life were type of treatment (insulin injection versus three oral hypoglycemic drugs), diabetic complications and Hemoglobin A1C level (r = -0.262, 0.220 and 0.248, respectively, p < 0.05). Gender was correlated to quality of life in the sexual functioning dimension (r = -0.470, p < 0.001).
Conclusions: Insulin injections has a greater impact on quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes than those with three oral hypoglycemic drugs. Healthcare workers should be aware of those associated factors in deciding appropriate treatment plan to maximize patient's quality of life.
