Factors Associated with Herpes Zoster Vaccination in the Elderly
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to identify factors that determine the intention to obtain herpes zoster vaccination among the elderly in Thailand.
Design: A cross-sectional study.
Materials and Methods: Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire in participants aged 60 years and above who visited the Comprehensive Geriatric Clinic at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, The Thai Red Cross Society, in September 2019.
Results: Of the 428 participants who completed the questionnaire, 199 respondents were in the vaccinated/intended group, and 229 were in the unintended group. The logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between herpes zoster vaccination and perception of vaccine benefit (aOR 6.14, 95% CI 2.59–14.57), perception of the severity and complication of herpes zoster (aOR 2.75, 95% CI 1.24–6.13), the recommendation from healthcare providers and media (aOR 2.46, 95% CI 1.50–4.04), family members or friends with a history of zoster (aOR 1.96, 95% CI 1.25–3.08), knowledge about herpes zoster vaccine (aOR 1.91, 95% CI 1.19–3.07), and concern of side effects (aOR 0.52, 95% CI 0.32–0.84).
Conclusion: This study shows that perceiving the vaccine's benefits is the foremost decisive factor for obtaining herpes zoster vaccination. Promoting suggestive information on immunization may increase vaccine coverage in the Thai elderly.
