Abstract

This qualitative research aims to 1) To examine the conditions of the political-ideological struggle of the Phu Phan comrades as expressed through revolutionary songs during 1957 - 1982; 2) To synthesize the content of revolutionary songs reflecting the political ideology of the Phu Phan comrades during 1957 - 1982; and 3) To present the patterns of political-ideological struggle of the Phu Phan comrades as expressed through revolutionary songs during 1957 - 1982. The study employed in-depth interviews with 20 Phu Phan comrade artists and 10 scholars. The research findings are as follows: 1) During the period 1957–1982, comrade farmers and intellectuals on the Phu Phan mountain range faced pressure and suppression from the state. This situation caused villagers to flee the pressure to the forest in large numbers. The Communist Party of Thailand emphasized political struggle and thus established the Phu Phan Arts Unit to fight with the weapon of ideas. Revolutionary songs were composed to guide, nurture, and drive forward the movement of struggle. 2) The synthesis of the content identified three types of songs: marches with concise and rousing melodies; string songs influenced by student groups after the events of October 6, 1976; and Luk Thung-Mor Lam songs, which represent the folk identity of Comrade Phu Phan. These songs clearly reflect political ideologies, including liberalism, which emphasizes rights and freedoms; socialism, which emphasizes unity; and anarchism, which opposes state power, capitalism, and feudalism and 3) The research proposes the S-M-I Model as a framework for explaining the process of developing political ideology among the Phu Phan comrades. The research proposes the S-M-I Model as a framework for the process of creating political ideologies among the Phu Phan comrades. It consists of: 1) Suffer: telling stories of suffering to build the determination to fight. 2) Mobilize: Stimulate and create unity through content that evokes shared emotions and 3) Ideologize: develop and cultivate an ideological stance. The study is subject to survivor bias; further research is needed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the ideology.
