THE EFFECTS OF COMMUNITY-BASED ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING FOR DAILY LIFE COMMUNICATION ON THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF GRADE 6 STUDENTS

Abstract

This study aimed to: 1) Examine the levels of English communicative skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing among Grade 6 students after participating in community-based learning; 2) Compare the students’ English communicative skill scores before and after the learning intervention; and 3) investigate the students’ satisfaction with the learning activities. The sample consisted of 15 Grade 6 students from Wat Ban Sakae Sam School, under the Buriram Primary Educational Service Area Office 1, located in Sakae Sam Subdistrict, Mueang Buriram District, Buriram Province. The participants were selected through cluster random sampling, with the school serving as the sampling unit. The research instruments comprised: 1) Learning management plans; 2) An English communicative skills test; 3) An assessment form for English communicative skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing; and 4) a satisfaction questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, and paired-samples t-test. The findings revealed that: 1) After the learning intervention, the students’ overall English communicative skills were at a very high level ( = 4.41, S.D. = 0.49). Listening had the highest mean score ( = 4.58, S.D. = 0.51), followed by writing, speaking, and reading, respectively; 2) The students’ mean posttest score ( = 25.47, S.D. = 1.92) was significantly higher than their mean pretest score ( = 13.20, S.D. = 2.18), at the .05 level,
t (14) = 22.38, p < .001; and 3) The students’ overall satisfaction with the learning activities was at the highest level ( = 4.81, S.D. = 0.39).
