ENHANCING THE GROWTH MINDSET OF UPPER SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGH INTEGRATED GROUP COUNSELING
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to: 1) Develop a group counseling program to enhance the growth mindset of upper secondary school students; 2) Compare the growth mindset of students in the experimental group across the pretest, posttest, and follow-up phases; and 3) Compare the growth mindset of students between the experimental and control groups across the pretest, posttest, and follow-up phases. The study employed an experimental research design. The participants consisted of 18 upper secondary school students selected through purposive sampling based on growth mindset scores below the 25th percentile. The participants were equally assigned to an experimental group (n = 9) and a control group (n = 9). The research instruments included a group counseling program designed to enhance students' growth mindset and a Growth Mindset Scale for Upper Secondary School Students, which demonstrated a reliability coefficient of .95. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean), one-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), and two-way repeated measures ANOVA with pairwise comparisons. The findings revealed that: 1) The group counseling program consisted of eight 90-minute sessions conducted twice a week and incorporated six key components: belief in personal development, embracing academic challenges, learning from mistakes, persistence in learning, openness to feedback, and inspiration from others' success; 2) Students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher growth mindset scores at the posttest and follow-up assessments compared with the pretest at the .05 level of statistical significance; and 3) The overall growth mindset scores of the experimental group differed significantly from those of the control group across the three measurement occasions at the .05 level of statistical significance.
