COMMUNICATING THE IDENTITY OF "PLENG BOK" IN THE PAK PHANANG RIVER BASIN NAKHON SI THAMMARAT PROVINCE

Abstract

This research aims to study the identity of Pleng Bok, a form of Southern Thai folk performance in the Pak Phanang River Basin, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, and to examine the communication process of expressing this identity through creative media. A qualitative research approach was employed with seven key informants, including Pleng Bok masters, local artists, and community members. Data were collected through structured and unstructured interviews, focus group discussions, observations, and document analysis, then transcribed and analyzed using content analysis with triangulation techniques to enhance credibility. The findings revealed that Pleng Bok reflects the identity of the Pak Phanang River Basin community in four dimensions: 1) Personal identity, expressed through the dedication and expertise of the Mae Pleng (lead singers) and Luk Khu (chorus); 2) Linguistic and performative identity, communicated through the local southern Thai dialect, poetic duels, expressive gestures, and traditional attire; 3) Relational identity, reflected in interactions among performers, audiences, and the ritual of paying respect to Pleng Bok masters, strengthening ties between local scholars, artists, and youth groups; and 4) Community identity, demonstrated through the transmission of local wisdom and cultural heritage from Pleng Bok masters and artists to younger generations. The communication of Pleng Bok identity was conveyed through a creative documentary medium following three stages-pre-production, production, and post-production-which effectively enhanced young people’s and audiences’ understanding and appreciation of Pleng Bok culture. The study concludes that communicating the identity of Pleng Bok through creative media supports the preservation and sustainable transmission of this folk performance as a vital element of cultural heritage.
