TRANSLATION STRATEGIES IN RENDERING MATERIAL CULTURE TERMS FROM THAI INTO ENGLISH FROM A TRAVEL E-BOOK: 10 ROUTES ALONG THE WATERSIDE TO EXPERIENCE THE CHARMING OF THAI WAY OF LIFE

Abstract

The purpose of this research article is to classify material culture terms and study strategies for translating material culture terms from Thai to English that appear in the e-book 10 Tourist Routes Along the River. The Charming of Thai Way of Life and the English version titled 10 Routes along the Waterside to Experience the Charming of Thai Way of Life This research used qualitative research methods. Important information for the study can be obtained from the electronic book titled 10 Tourist Routes Along the River. The Charming of Thai Way of Life and the English version titled 10 Routes along the Waterside to Experience the Charming of Thai Way of Life of the Tourism Authority of Thailand that have been published on various website channels. The research tool used Newmark's concept of cultural vocabulary. In classifying cultural terms The results of the research found 154 material cultural terms divided into 4 categories: 1) Food cultural terms, 65 words were found, such as Tam Sua, Lod Chong, etc. 2) 49 cultural terms for buildings and structures. such as glass walls, thatched roofs, etc. 3) Cultural vocabulary in the category of clothing found a total of 23 words, such as sinta, loincloth, pearl-pattern cloth, etc. and 4) Cultural vocabulary in the category of equipment, found a total of 17 words, such as jars, pongpang, cages, etc. This can be separated A total of 5 translation strategies were used. It was found that translation using borrowed words had the highest frequency (67 times, 43.50%), followed by translation using words with broad meanings (31 times, 20.12%). Translation by Explanation (23 times, 14.93%), direct translation (17 times, 11.03%), and translation by using comparable words with cultural vocabulary in the destination language (16 times, 10.38%). The results of this research can be used as Guidelines for further transferring material cultural vocabulary from Thai to English.
