Abstract

Background and Aims: In contemporary society, technology plays a significant role in the daily lives of people of all ages, particularly children and adolescents who use the Internet extensively. Consequently, the development of digital citizenship has become a critical priority for educational institutions to promote the appropriate, safe, and responsible use of technology among learners. However, despite the growing body of research, most studies have focused on upper secondary and higher education students, with limited attention to the factor structure of digital citizenship of lower secondary students. This study therefore aimed to examine the digital citizenship factors of lower secondary students.

Methodology: The sample consisted of 1,276 lower secondary students under the Secondary Educational Service Area Office Chon Buri Rayong in the academic year 2024, selected using multistage sampling. The research instrument was a digital citizenship scale for lower secondary students, consisting of 58 items on a five-point Likert scale, with an overall reliability coefficient of .934. Exploratory factor analysis was employed to analyze the factors of digital citizenship using principal component analysis with oblique rotation by the Direct Oblimin method.

Results: The digital citizenship among lower secondary students consisted of five factors: (1) the emotional quotient and safety in digital use; (2) the digital knowledge and creative digital communication; (3) the commercial digital use; (4) the digital access; and (5) the digital law and etiquette. These five factors accounted for 61.360 percent of the total variance, with each factor having an eigenvalue greater than 1.00.

Conclusion: The findings indicate that digital citizenship among lower secondary students demonstrates an integrative structure, with emotional quotient and safety in digital use as the most influential factors. This highlights the critical role of students’ ability to regulate emotions and protect themselves in online environments. The results imply that instructional practices should move beyond technical competencies by integrating emotional, ethical, and safety dimensions alongside digital skills. Such an approach would better support students in using technology appropriately, safely, and responsibly within the digital society.
