Background and Aims: The reception unit represents the initial stage of inmates’ adaptation process and constitutes a critical transition period from freedom to formal incarceration. This study aimed (1) to examine the problems and obstacles affecting the adaptation of newly admitted inmates in the reception unit of Thanyaburi District Prison, and (2) to propose guidelines for addressing such problems and obstacles in accordance with international standards and human rights principles.
Methodology: This study employed a qualitative research design. The participants consisted of 22 informants, including 10 newly admitted inmates, 5 inmate mentors or assistant correctional officers, and 7 prison personnel from Thanyaburi District Prison. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through document review, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis and thematic analysis, with findings organized and synthesized in accordance with the research objectives.
Results: The findings were divided into two parts. Part 1 examined the problems and obstacles in the adaptation of newly admitted inmates in the reception unit, based on information from newly admitted inmates and inmate mentors or assistant correctional officers. The results revealed two major dimensions of problems: (1) physical and environmental factors, including overcrowding and food provision; and (2) psychological and emotional factors, including limited contact with family and the lack of counseling support.
Part 2 focused on proposing guidelines to address these problems through focus group discussions with prison personnel. The findings indicated that solutions to physical and environmental problems included (1) improving basic facilities along with the provision of recreational activities, and (2) providing special dietary arrangements for inmates with chronic illnesses (such as gout) and strengthening oversight of food distribution by enabling direct communication between staff and inmates. Solutions to psychological and emotional problems included (1) increasing the frequency and accessibility of family visits, both in-person and online, and integrating collaboration among correctional officers, nurses, psychologists, and assistant officers in caring for inmates during the first week of admission; and (2) implementing orientation programs for newly admitted inmates supported by a mentor system or assistant correctional officers, alongside enhancing the role of psychologists in providing counseling from the initial days of incarceration. These measures are expected to reduce stress and social isolation, prevent conflicts within the reception unit, and strengthen inmates’ motivation to adapt effectively.
Conclusion: The knowledge and innovation generated from this study contribute to the advancement of humane correctional management by enhancing the effectiveness of adaptation processes for newly admitted inmates in the reception unit. The study proposes an integrated admission management model that promotes collaboration among correctional officers, nurses, psychologists, and assistant correctional officers to ensure continuous physical and mental health care. In addition, the study recommends the development of a mental health information system linked to proactive counseling and case-based follow-up, which can reduce stress and reinforce inmates’ adaptive capacity during the early stage of incarceration.
