The Synthesis of Research on Learning Management to Develop Mathematical Problem-Solving Abilities of Primary School Students

Abstract

Background and Aims: Designing learning experiences to develop skills and abilities in solving mathematical problems is crucial. If teachers regularly organize activities that allow students to practice problem-solving skills or strategies, it can provide a foundation for students to apply these problem-solving skills to other disciplines and adapt them to real-life situations. This research has the following purposes: (1) to study the characteristics of research on learning management to develop the mathematical problem-solving abilities of primary school students. (2) to analyze the magnitude of the effect size between learning management methods and the ability to solve mathematics problems of primary school students.

Methodology: The sample group used in this research consisted of 21 experimental research studies on learning management aimed at developing problem-solving skills in mathematics among primary school students, published between 2012 and 2022. The research instrument was a research characteristic analysis form. Data were analyzed using meta-analysis with the R program.

Results: (1) The Entire research is a learning management method to develop the mathematics problem-solving ability of elementary school students. (2) All of the research has a positive effect size (effect size 0.94 to 43.86), and the variance of effect size is significant. However, the factors that caused differences in meaning, the effect size of the experiment found that the different types of variables or intervention variables affecting the effect size was learning management methods, including the use of learning management methods in conjunction with the process of solving mathematical problems, using learning management methods together with math problem-solving strategies and the use of learning management methods using other theories.

Conclusion: The design of learning management approaches to develop problem-solving skills in mathematics for primary school students was highly effective. All studies showed significantly positive effect sizes (ranging from 0.94 to 43.86). The type of independent variable or learning management approach influenced the differences in effect sizes. Effective approaches included incorporating problem-solving processes, integrating problem-solving strategies, and applying other learning theories in learning management.
